Some days we find that confinement is somehow even

Some days we find that confinement is somehow even better than fine. Maybe it's the caffeine, or maybe it's just the comfort of being "stuck" in Dar Kawa, even if all shops and restaurants are open just beyond our doorsteps. Coffee is all the company that is required some mornings (preferably accompanied by a newspaper or a good book). The essential cup of local Joe - a keeper in Marrakesh who is strong, dark, and easy on the eyes. A fragrant charmer whose charms are even sweeter in the Mumtaz suite.⁣

Gracing the riad's wall, one will notice the whimsical faces of several new members of the family. The photographs are taken from Valerie Barkowski's recent published book 54 ＋ 1 Portraits. During the first confinement, Dar Kawa's proprietor created a series of daily "caricature drawings" made from everyday objects found around the house, proving that creativity has no boundaries.⁣

Today we are able to share updated info about the situation in Marrakesh.⁣
When opening of the borders was announced we got slightly "too enthusiastic" i guess...⁣
⁣
The good news is that the moroccan borders are open now. Foreign travelers can visit the country since monday sept 7th. A hotel booking and to be tested Covid negative are required to enter the country. This is valid for all travelers who do not need a visa to enter Morocco.⁣
⁣
Together with this positive news, the papers announced that Casablanca is getting locked down, and that schools are closing. Some popular neighborhoods in Marrakesh have also been locked down again.⁣
⁣
Marrakesh is at a standstill since almost 6 months now. Everybody is eagerly waiting to get back to normal. Difficult to imagine the old city with all the shutters closed and not one single soul in the narrow lanes and streets.⁣
⁣
We remain positive, as always... At Dar Kawa, we continue to pamper the riad and stay quiet for a little longer. We hope that people will increase their efforts to respect social distancing in order to get back to a joyful life soon.⁣

Dar Kawa is silent and locked up since 100 days.⁣
What can we say...⁣
We have missed you dear guests.⁣
We have missed the friendly and calm atmosphere of our riad full of nice souls.⁣
June 21st, it is summer today and for us that means that the season is over.⁣
Confinement will become de-confinement in the next days, the medina will slowly come back to life. How? No idea...⁣

We are positive but there is a reality behind the door and nobody knows what is going to happen. For these last 100 days the medina was dead, not a soul, not one open place. People make selfies, completely alone, on Jemaa El Fna square.⁣
Marrakesh and Morocco live on tourism. How will the city go through this? No idea...⁣

°⁣
°⁣
During these weeks Abdelhadi and Brahim have taken great care of the house. All doors and windows have been painted, all iron grids as well. Tiles and tadelakt have been waxed from ground floor to terrace. Now we will take care of mandatory sanitary needs and rules to live in this "new" context.⁣

°⁣
Saïda, Laaziza, Younes, Youssef, Khadija and Amina have been away since march 16th. For more than 100 days we also miss Saida's delicious friday couscous...⁣
We will keep you posted whenever we will have news to share.⁣

At Dar Kawa we literally closed the curtain 12 days ago.
Wow, who would have imagined that only 3 or 4 weeks back...
The riad has been cleaned and "packed", like closing a holiday home where all furtniture is covered with white sheets.
Most of our staff went home and stays confined.
Those who are still at work are the "riad watchers", never together, a person keeps the house and exchanges place with someone else.
We have decided to repaint all the woodwork, we like to take care of our riad, you know that... Luckily we could buy paint before all the shops closed.

What next? We have no idea.
For how long are we closed ? We have no idea. °

More than ever we are proud to be independent.
More than ever we feel we were right not to use booking-com.
More than ever we know that we have taken the right path by buying organic products as much as possible, by preparing our cleaning products in house, by banning plastic bottles.
More than ever we feel proud that during all those years we have empowered our team in every way possible.
But now we are wondering, what can we do to make a better world?

Of course we can continue to communicate and show nice pictures of what we had and what we think will be again. We need to be positive and live this moment as well as possible. But what else?
How should we move on ? How can we make things better? How can we create a better world?

This is it, Dar Kawa has closed its doors since yesterday.
Last clients left, the house was cleaned and packed, our riad is ready for a long sleep. One of our staff members will take care and keep the house...
Nandi, the indian mascot, will look over an empty patio for a while... But we hope that everybody will stay at home and follow the quarantine rule. Only way to kill this virus.
If we all follow this rule, in a short time all this will only be a bad memory.

Table settings matter for us first of all because we lave to create them but also because we love our guests to get inspired by Dar Kawa.

Meet Brahim, team member of Dar Kawa. You will see him during the day or at night. Brahim takes mainly care of all the open spaces of the riad.
He water the plants, sets up and cleans the terrace.
Brahim also takes care of daily shopping, from the organic market to the bank, he sources and provides whatever is needed in the house.
Small repairs, painting and preparing our natural cleaning products are also part of his job.

Meet Khadija who is part of Dar Kawa's team since several years.
Khadija takes care of all the linens of the house. Washing, ironing, quality and stains check.
Khaidja is also the person who bakes our homemade granola and khamsa cookies.
You will meet her only on wednesdays in Dar Kawa, the rest of the time she is at the workshop where our laundry facilities have been installed.
