Cy Twombly painted all his life, until his last breath or almost. He left an unfinished canvas in 2011. He had a full life, that of an artist with prolific production. No wonder that the Pompidou Center in Paris devoted a retrospective exhibition to him. An astounding and touching combination of certain works of his life. I went there in February 2017.

Cy Twombly a peint toute sa vie, jusqu’à son dernier souffle ou presque. Il laisse d’ailleurs une toile inachevée en 2011. Il a eu une vie pleine, celle d’un artiste à la production prolifique. Pas étonnant que le centre Pompidou à Paris lui ait consacré une exposition rétrospective. Un assemblage tant époustouflant qu’émouvant de certaines œuvres de sa vie. Je m’y suis rendue en février 2017.
And I discovered that he went to Morocco in the early 1950s. American, his land of heart is Italy. But in 1952, he received a travel grant from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. A budget that takes him to Palermo, Rome and finally to Morocco.
Et j’ai découvert qu’il s’était rendu au Maroc au début des années 50. Américain, sa terre de cœur est l’Italie. Mais en 1952, il reçoit une bourse de voyage du Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Un budget qui l’emmène à Palerme, Rome et enfin au Maroc.
In the middle of the Moroccan winter, he visits Casablanca, Marrakech, Tangier and walks in the Atlas. He visits Paul Bowles in Tetouan and shares with him special moments in the region. His Moroccan journey ends when he goes back to Spain before reaching Italy.
En plein hiver marocain, il visite Casablanca, Marrakech, Tanger et marche dans l’Atlas. Il visite Paul Bowles à Tétouan et partage avec lui des moments privilégiés dans la région. Son périple marocain se termine alors qu’il remonte vers l’Espagne avant d’atteindre l’Italie.
Paintings and tapestries
Presumably touched by Morocco, Cy Twombly painted several paintings whose inspiration seems all Moroccan. In fact, according to his notebooks, he would have drawn inspiration from African collections of an ethnographic museum in Rome.

Vraisemblablement touché par le Maroc, Cy Twombly peint plusieurs tableaux dont l’inspiration semble toute marocaine. En réalité, et selon ses carnets de note, il se serait inspiré de collections africaines d’un musée ethnographique de Rome.
Perhaps he did not paint on the spot but he would have woven it. Cy Twombly has made tapestries in Tangier and Tetouan. These pieces were exhibited in 1953 at the Galleria Arte Contemporanea in Florence.

I like to discover the peculiarities of the life of an artist, his ephemeral inspirations. His travels that shape him and change him forever. Morocco is a country that inspires. Definitely.
J’aime découvrir ses particularités de la vie d’un artiste, ses inspirations éphémères. Ses voyages qui le forment et le changent à jamais. Le Maroc est un pays qui marque. Assurément.
